Retina surgery encompasses a broad range of procedures designed to repair, protect, or restore the retina and the structures around it. Most retinal procedures are performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, keeping you relaxed and comfortable throughout. General anaesthesia is used when appropriate, particularly for complex or lengthy cases.
Three very small incisions — each less than one millimetre — are made in the white of the eye. These allow the surgeon to introduce the instruments needed to work inside the eye.
Using the Alcon Constellation Vision System, the surgeon removes the vitreous gel, addresses the specific retinal problem — whether reattaching the retina, peeling a membrane, or closing a macular hole — and uses laser, gas, or silicone oil as needed to support the repair.
The tiny incisions are sealed and the procedure is complete. Many retinal surgeries are performed as day procedures, allowing you to go home the same day.

If a gas bubble was used to support the retina, you may need to maintain a specific head position for several days to weeks while the gas holds the retina in place.
