What Is Color Fundus Photography?

A fundus camera is a specialised piece of equipment designed to photograph the interior of the eye — including the retina, optic disc, macula, and blood vessels. The camera uses a combination of lenses and a bright flash of light to capture a wide-angle, high-resolution colour image of the retinal surface. These photographs are stored digitally and can be compared to images taken at future visits, allowing your doctor to track any changes that occur over time with a level of precision that is simply not possible through examination alone.

What Conditions Can CFP Help Detect and Monitor?

  • Diabetic retinopathy — changes in the retinal blood vessels caused by diabetes
  • Age-related macular degeneration — changes at the centre of the retina
  • Glaucoma — changes in the appearance of the optic disc and nerve fibre layer

What Happens During the Test?

Step 1 — Pupil Dilation

Eye drops are used to dilate your pupils, allowing the camera to capture a wider and clearer view of the retina. This takes around 20 to 30 minutes to take full effect.

Step 2 — Positioning

You sit in front of the fundus camera and rest your chin on the support. You are asked to look at a small target light inside the camera and keep your eye as still as possible.

Step 3 — The Photograph

A bright flash of light is used to illuminate the retina and the camera captures a high-resolution colour image in an instant. Several photographs may be taken at different angles to ensure full coverage of the retinal surface.

Step 4 — Review

The images are reviewed immediately by your specialist, who can discuss any findings with you on the same day. The photographs are stored permanently in your record for comparison at future visits.
