Slowing Down Short-Sightedness Before It Gets Worse

Myopia — short-sightedness — is one of the fastest-growing health concerns in the world today. Children are developing myopia earlier, and their prescriptions are often progressing rapidly year after year. High levels of myopia carry serious long-term risks for eye health — including significantly increased chances of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration later in life. Myopia management is not just about correcting vision today — it is about protecting the eye for a lifetime. At RGC Eye Hospital, we offer evidence-based myopia management strategies for children whose short-sightedness is progressing.

Why Is Myopia Getting Worse in Children?

Research has identified two key drivers of the current myopia epidemic — reduced time spent outdoors in natural light, and increased time on near tasks such as reading, studying, and using screens. When children spend too little time looking at distant objects and too little time in bright outdoor light, the eye tends to grow too long — and it is this excessive elongation of the eyeball that causes myopia and drives its progression. Standard glasses and contact lenses correct the blurred vision myopia causes, but they do not slow the progression of the underlying condition.

Myopia Management Options We Offer

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Specially designed rigid contact lenses are worn overnight. They gently reshape the cornea while the child sleeps, providing clear vision throughout the day without any lenses or glasses. Evidence shows Ortho-K can significantly reduce the rate of myopia progression in children.

Myopia Control Soft Contact Lenses

Specially designed daily disposable contact lenses with a unique optical design that corrects central vision while simultaneously reducing the peripheral blur that drives eye growth. A convenient daytime option for children who are suitable for contact lens wear.

Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops applied nightly have been shown in extensive clinical research to significantly slow myopia progression. They are generally well-tolerated and can be used alone or in combination with other myopia control strategies.

Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses

Specially designed spectacle lenses that correct vision in the centre while creating a specific peripheral optical effect that reduces the stimulus for eye growth. A non-invasive option for children not yet ready for contact lenses.
