What Is SLT?

SLT uses a low-energy laser to target specific pigmented cells in the trabecular meshwork — the drainage tissue of the eye. Unlike older laser treatments, SLT does not cause thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. Instead, it stimulates a biological response that improves the efficiency of the drainage system, allowing aqueous fluid to flow out of the eye more easily and reducing intraocular pressure. The effect can last for several years, and the treatment can be repeated if needed.

What Happens During Treatment?

Step 1 — Preparing the Eye

Step 2 — The Laser

A special contact lens is placed on the eye and the laser is applied to the trabecular meshwork through the clear cornea. The procedure involves a series of gentle laser pulses applied around the drainage angle. You may see flashes of green light during the treatment.

Step 3 — Done

The procedure takes only five to ten minutes and is virtually painless. You remain in the clinic briefly afterward so your eye pressure can be checked before you leave.

After SLT

Some mild redness and light sensitivity are normal for a day or two. Anti-inflammatory drops are prescribed for a short period. The pressure-lowering effect of SLT develops gradually over four to six weeks, so your specialist will reassess your pressure at a follow-up appointment about six weeks after the procedure to evaluate the response.
