Refractive Surgery (LASIK / SMILE / ICL / IPCL)

Refractive Surgery is an advanced vision correction procedure that reduces or eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses. Using techniques such as LASIK, SMILE, ICL, and IPCL, it effectively treats myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism, providing clearer vision with a quick recovery for suitable candidates.

Life Without Glasses or Contact Lenses — It Is Possible

Imagine waking up in the morning and being able to see clearly without reaching for your glasses. Imagine swimming, playing sport, or simply going about your day without the inconvenience of corrective lenses. Refractive surgery makes this a reality for millions of people around the world — and at RGC Eye Hospital, we offer a range of modern, proven procedures to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism with outstanding safety and precision.

What Is Refractive Surgery?

Refractive surgery is a group of procedures that permanently correct the way your eye focuses light. In a normal eye, light focuses precisely on the retina, producing a sharp image. In a short-sighted, long-sighted, or astigmatic eye, light focuses in the wrong place, producing a blurred image. Refractive surgery reshapes the cornea or implants a corrective lens inside the eye to redirect light onto the retina correctly — giving you clear, natural vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Procedures We Offer

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK is the most widely performed refractive procedure in the world. A thin flap is created on the corneal surface, a laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error, and the flap is replaced. Vision recovery is rapid — most patients see clearly within 24 hours — and the procedure is suitable for a wide range of prescriptions.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

SMILE is a newer, flapless laser procedure in which a small disc of corneal tissue called a lenticule is created inside the cornea using a femtosecond laser and removed through a tiny incision. With no flap involved, the cornea retains more structural integrity, making SMILE particularly suitable for patients who are very active or at risk of eye trauma.

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)

For patients whose prescription is too high for laser surgery, or whose corneas are too thin to safely undergo laser treatment, the ICL is an excellent alternative. A thin, foldable lens is implanted inside the eye in front of the natural lens through a small incision. It is invisible, removable if ever needed, and produces outstanding visual quality.

IPCL (Implantable Phakic Contact Lens)

Similar to the ICL in principle, the IPCL is an alternative phakic intraocular lens option that provides excellent results for patients with high prescriptions. Your surgeon will advise which implantable lens best suits your individual eye anatomy and prescription.

Am I a Suitable Candidate?

Not everyone is suitable for every type of refractive surgery. A thorough pre-operative assessment is essential to determine which procedure is safest and most effective for your individual eyes. Key factors include your prescription, corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, and the overall health of your eyes. At RGC, we take this assessment seriously — we will only recommend a procedure that we are confident is right for you.
