The “air puff test” is a slang term for **non-contact tonometry** (NCT), a test used during an eye exam to measure the pressure inside your eye. The air puff test gives your eye doctor an eye pressure reading known as intraocular pressure (IOP), which helps detect glaucoma.
Our specialists are available 6 days a week for in-person and virtual consultations.
High pressure inside the eye is one of the most dangerous threats to your long-term vision — and it causes absolutely no pain, no redness, and no symptoms until serious damage has already been done. NCT measures your eye pressure in seconds, without touching your eye, giving your doctor the information needed to protect your sight before harm begins.
NCT measures the pressure of the fluid inside your eye — known as intraocular pressure or IOP. A brief, gentle puff of air is directed at the surface of your eye. The instrument measures how your cornea responds and calculates the pressure with impressive accuracy. No drops are needed, nothing touches the eye, and the whole process takes just a few seconds per eye.
Elevated intraocular pressure is the primary risk factor for glaucoma — a condition that silently destroys the optic nerve and causes permanent, irreversible vision loss. There are often no warning signs until significant damage has already occurred. Catching high pressure early gives us the opportunity to step in and begin treatment long before your vision is affected.
You sit comfortably and rest your chin and forehead on the support frame. No drops, no preparation, and nothing to worry about.
You are asked to keep your eye open and look at a small light inside the instrument. This takes just a moment.
A brief, gentle puff of air is directed at your eye. It is completely painless and over almost instantly.
Your pressure reading appears on the screen immediately. The test is repeated two to three times per eye for accuracy and the whole process takes under two minutes.
NCT is recommended for everyone as part of a regular eye check. It is especially important for people over 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, patients with diabetes or high blood pressure, and anyone using steroid medication regularly. The earlier a problem is found, the easier it is to manage.
