What Counts as an Eye Emergency?

Not every eye problem needs emergency attention — but some absolutely do. If you experience any of the following, you should seek emergency eye care immediately without delay:

• Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes — even if it comes and goes
• A curtain, shadow, or veil appearing across part of your vision
• A sudden shower of new floaters or flashing lights in your vision
• Severe eye pain that comes on suddenly
• Chemical splash or exposure to any harmful substance in the eye
• A penetrating injury or sharp object that has entered the eye
• Blunt trauma to the eye from an accident or injury
• Sudden onset of double vision
• A red, painful eye with nausea and seeing halos around lights

What to Do in an Eye Emergency

Chemical Exposure

If a chemical has entered your eye, begin flushing the eye immediately with large amounts of clean water — do not stop to call for help first. Flush continuously for at least 15 to 20 minutes, then come to RGC Eye Hospital immediately or call for emergency assistance.

Foreign Object in the Eye

Do not rub the eye or try to remove the object yourself. Cover the eye loosely with a clean cloth and come to us immediately. Rubbing or pressing on the eye can cause further damage.

Sudden Vision Loss or New Floaters

Come to our emergency service immediately. Conditions such as retinal detachment can progress rapidly, and the faster treatment is initiated, the better the visual outcome. Do not wait to see if the symptoms resolve on their own.
